It is entirely supported by the Cyprus Eye Bank Γρηγόρης Γεωργαρίου

CyprusEye_Bank is designed as a -not for Profit -NGO to comply with the nine Principles of EyeBanking as declared by the Global Alliance of Eye Bank Association recently. (2018)
CyprusEye_Bank abides to the Principle of Preventing Commercialisation of EyeBanking- (For Profit Provision of Grafts)- which is probably the only possible way nowdays to treat Patients in Cyprus and Greece. Finally, we certainly endorse the current international consensus that prohibits trafficking and transplant tourism.

Cornea Donation
Corneal blindness is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide. A recent survey by the Alliance of Eye and Vision Research in the United States, showed that blindness is second only to cancer (for Hispanics) and Alzheimer's (for Caucasians) as the ailment that most people feel would have the greatest impact on their life, while African-Americans ranked it first! (Please see: https://www.eyeresearch.org/pdf/Poll_press_release.pdf)
It is the result of ocular infections (most commonly due to contact lenses), local and systemic degenerative and inflammatory disorders, and trauma. In contrast to other forms of blindness, corneal blindness is curable through corneal transplantation. With a 95% success rate, cornea transplantation is the oldest, most common, and most successful organ transplant operation to date.
How is cornea donation different from other solid organ donation (e.g. kidneys, heart)?
Compared to other solid organ transplants (e.g. kidneys, heart, lung), corneal donation is unique in several aspects:
a. It does not require an alive (brain-dead) donor for tissue procurement. Cornea tissue procurement occurs within the first 24 hours after death.
b. It is not the whole eye that is removed and transplanted, but only the very front layer of it (it measures 12 mm in diameter and 0.6 mm in thickness).
c. The donor tissue can be used successfully up to 14 days (Cold Storage and over one month Storage in Culture) after Procurement.
d. Systemic diseases (e.g. cancer) that would preclude donation of other organs, are not prohibitive for corneal donation. With the exception of highly communicable diseases (e.g. hepatitis, HIV, prion disease), anyone can be a donor.
e. Quality of corneal tissue does not depend on donor age.
f. Wearing glasses or having other eye common diseases (e.g. glaucoma, macular degeneration) does not affect the quality of the cornea tissue.
g. Cornea donation will not affect the appearance of the donor and open casket funeral can proceed as scheduled without any delays.
